Transforming Public Access to Government Data for the Nation’s Largest County
One of the largest counties in the United States serving millions of residents and managing dozens of separate government departments faced critical challenges in its digital public interface: vital public data was fragmented and difficult to access, while its primary website struggled with outdated design and limited functionality. With growing demands for transparency, accessibility, and modern digital services, the county needed a comprehensive transformation.
We spearheaded a two-pronged strategic initiative to address these challenges. First, we managed the end-to-end development and rollout of the county’s inaugural comprehensive open data portal. This involved consolidating thousands of datasets from disparate departments into a single, searchable online platform, with our team leading the frontend public design and development, prioritizing user-friendly navigation and accessibility for all.
With similar strategic importance, we led the complete modernization of the main public-facing website. This extensive overhaul involved implementing a new, accessible design compliant with the latest web standards, developing communication tools to enhance communication between the county and its residents, implementing life chat functionality for residents seeking services and information, and critically, engineering the seamless integration of these new systems with complex legacy platforms to ensure continuity and improved service delivery with near zero downtime. This modernization transformed the primary digital gateway for county services.
The combined results were transformative. The open data portal dramatically increased public access to government data, with a 60% increase in dataset access and internal departments reported greater efficiency in data sharing. The revamped website saw significantly improved user engagement and satisfaction, offering residents intuitive access to services and information. Together, these initiatives positioned the county as a leader in open government and digital innovation, earning widespread local and national media coverage as a model for comprehensive government digital transformation.
